Being a male makes it a touch more difficult, but I find telling people that there is a guarantee that they'll enjoy it.
If they don't, they don't have to pay.
If they do, pay up and spread the good word...

Oh, and get your regular clients to seriously push.
For every X amount of new clients they refer, you'll give them an extra X amount of time on the table.

Promotion-wise I do a monthly special...

Start with "I am a Licensed Massage Therapist..."

Or put in whatever ad, that this is a non-sexual massage. I mean, choose your own words, but get it across that there is a guarantee. It gives REAL clients self-assurance that the won't waste their money, and it also makes you look self-confident.

Just an idea...

yeah not a bad idea, i just have problems with men being under the age of 50 and not bad looking. theyre always tryin to get some, and even saying that im legit theyd probably just think "yeah so was the previous hooker".

Do you have an intake form that your clients fill out prior to the massage? It should include a statement at the end to the effect of "...any sexual comments or actions will terminate the session immediately and the client is still responsible for payment."

Good luck!

i havent practiced in almost 10 years, but the place i used to work didnt have us do much, just have the people pay then the clock was ticking. back when california/los angeles had different laws per city, this area didnt have any laws. now im registered with the state, and will probably avoid that area. may have had something to do with the culture of the people that live there (a lot of asians, and theyre accustomed to renting girls like nothing) and probably what the other people in the establishment were doing. kind of why i didnt bother to pursue it more at the time. i was young just kind of didnt want to be bothered. but again, good point!

i didnt say every last one of them, i said it a apart of their culture, which is true. hostess clubs, room salons, pink parlours, karaoke rooms, ect... in fact, i think a lot of the places in the world it not a big deal, its mostly illegal in the united states. which i personally think is retarded, i dont have a problem with it, i just have a when people assume that im prostitute or try to convince me that i should be one.

i didnt say every last one of them

this is a common argument that racists make when they say racist things. you don't have to say "all" to make a racist comment. which you did.

which i personally think is retarded

and could you please not use "retarded" to mean "bad"? it's very insensitive.

and before you go and call me "too PC," remember that a huge part of being a massage therapist is being in tune with other people's feelings. one of the best ways to KEEP someone on your table once you've gotten them there is to treat them with respect.

fine, if you wanna it like that, i didnt mean "bad", i mean "ridiculous".

and what ever you wanna call it, i believe it to be the truth, and not because i read about it some place on the internet.

i would never in a million years talk about any of those things with a client unless they started the conversation, and then i would go into customer service mode and say "really, are you serious? wow, how interesting!". but im off duty, and edanya isnt even my real name.

agreed, but that doesn't mean you have to be insulting to asians. you're tired of people assuming things about you? don't do it to others.

nope, i just look really young and i dont want the internet to have my proper information. studied massage in 2002 when no one else would touch it because most people assumed it to be prostitution. in fact, i set up this community.

I am not really sure if there is a hard and fast "rule" as to paying after as opposed to before. From a business standpoint collecting payment up front could lead to fewer tips. From a spa point of view, of course they're going to try to sell you stuff at the end and if you have already paid for your service then you are way less likely to purchase products. I used to go to Pho Siam in Echo Park a lot. At some point they did change from charging after to charging when you check in. Not sure why that happened though.

i understand the idea behind tipping after for some people, but if youre legit it shouldnt be an issue to pay up front. were allowed to charge for this service as long as were not grossing the line into prostitution. and unless theyre putting it on a card i dont see why it would mess with the tip, unless the person is super cheap. would seem kind of rude to just walk out and not say thanks appropriately.

I totally see your point. So far I have always charged after, however, my clients are still n the friends/family/referral realm. The new clients I have had have had some connection to someone at the place where I work so I know payment won't be an issue. I do know though, that if I had a new client that had a vibe that was in any way one iota off I would charge up front. Not sure if this makes any sense, its just where I am at right now.

i have mixed feelings about this whole thread, not the topic, which is valid, but the conversation that ensued.

i am also of mixed asian heritage. i do feel slighted because of the statements above. of course, i'm not an asian business man, but i find it slightly insulting nonetheless for it to be inferred that women of my culture are 'rented.'

edanya, i feel that you perhaps are not seeing the point that skizzylizard is trying to make. generalizations are usually insulting. there may be truth in them, but to make such broad statements without knowing your audience may cause a reaction. there are generalizations about all races/cultures that people probably don't like. i don't know you or your background, but there's probably a generalization about your heritage that you don't care for. generalizations aren't true for everyone, but obviously some are true for other people. you had some asian men that wanted more, but i'm sure there have been incidents when asian men wanted nothing but a regular massage.

my incidents with men wanting more have almost exclusively been with white men. should i make the generalization that all white men want a little extra? or that i had a number of latino men whose feet smelled, so they all must? no. that's unfair. it's like the generalizations that eastern european women are prostitutes or mail order brides, jewish people are cheap, and african americans are lazy. i don't believe these things, i think people make their own destiny.

i think you guys should just agree to disagree. no one will win this argument, and you're just riling each other up trying to prove the other one wrong. everyone has their own perspective, and you don't have to agree with it. respect someone else's experience, share your own, and let go.

dont put words in my mouth, if you wanted clarification on that you shouldve said something, cause most of the asian men i spoke seemed to really like latinas and white girls. that could be mostly when theyre here, who knows, but i didnt say anything about asian women and my experience has been in america. it seems more common for people to want something opposite from them, like caucasian men seem to thing for exotic types. also in my experience, there are services that will ship out the type of women that particular culture is interested in. it may be more common to get an asian woman there, but thats probably just because theyre easier to find.

anyway, its shower time for me, ill get back to this later.

uhhh, what?

i don't see how i put words in your mouth. i didn't speak for you at all. nor did i say that i was confused about anything you said and needed clarification. i simply said that your generalizations are just that, general. they will not apply to everyone, and some people might be offended when you make those statements. if you can't see that, then there is no hope for a conversation where everyone might learn something.
